San Juan Foxes

In the Spring of 2018 we had the opportunity to photograph these beautiful foxes that inhabit the island of San Juan, WA. The black and silver coated foxes, which are typically not as commonly seen in red fox populations are actually quite common on this island. These foxes were introduced here to solve the European rabbit situation, which were also introduced to this island. There seemed to be two litters of kits in this little group of 9 that we were photographing. And the mothers seem to nurse both litters indiscriminately. They are almost always away from the den site, busy hunting. Whenever they come back to the den, the kits get so excited and playful, whether it may be that they’re excited about a rabbit mom brings back, or wanting to nurse.
